AOL - what router are you using?

I have seen AOL's Broadband and ICS pages - they specify Thomson routers. If I
wanted to use anything else - I wondered if anyone had any experience of ICS,
but not using Thomson eqpt? I rather fancy the Buffalo 802.11g routers, or the
US Robotics "faster than 802.11g" routers - but would not want to buy them
until I was assured they would work on an AOL connection? All AOL's endorsed
equipment is at www.dslsupport.co.uk, but is all 802.11b. I believe that in
using a proxy server (see www.adslguide.org.uk) u may use any equipment u like
- save the ADSL modem itself - which in my case wd be the Globespan Voyager
USB. But this method means that the computer attached to the ADSL modem wd
always have to be on, which is a bit of a bind!

My experience is you can use any modem/router you like with AOL as long
as you can set the MTU to 1400 or less, either in the router or at the
equipment connecting to it. Doing this AOL has worked properly for me,
so long as you follow the advice about the login names.

I have used several unbranded one port routers from a local supplier
here in Glasgow without problems, and also my own ZyXel 650. I have not
used an integrated wireless router but my Belkin 54g WAP works fine with
AOL behind whichever of the routers I have used. However a couple of
routers I tried did fail because I could not get the MTU to set to an
appropriate value. Careful equipment trial is recommended!

Beware, that site refers to AOL broadband in the USA, which is
different from that in the UK.

Just set up a Netgear DG-814, works a treat.

Have you had any problem using MSN Messenger to send file using these
routers?

Also with your well of knowledge with routers + AOL UK, have you try
NetGear router like WGR614 or any special prefer you have that works
better with AOL UK than others?

We have trouble with SpeedTouch 570 with AOL and We cannot send file
with Messenger but can receive. Any idea?

Thanks.

For reasons of security (I have had problems in the past with MS
provided services) I do not use MSN Messenger services of any sort, so I
am not able to help you there. AOL Messenger seems to work OK, but I
never use such services for file transfer. I would suggest that it is
likely to be a port needing opening either on your machine (if you have
a firewall installed on it) or the appropriate port needing to be set to
be passed through on your router. I am sorry I cannot help you with
which port or how to do this, these will be specific to the MSN
Messenger service, but perhaps others here can.

Did the service work before you installed the router?

I do not have any Netgear equipment apart from a small hub so I cannot
really comment on its suitability. I have no preference for one router
or another, I use whatever is cheapest and provides the service I need,
so most of my routers are cheap Origo or QTec or such like boxes mainly
based on the Conexant chip set. I have a couple of Alcatel based "no
brand" boxes and these are the ones that work best with AOL however as
these are locally sourced I hesitate to recommend them (I can always
take them back in person if they don't work!). They are from a company
called Priceless computing ( http://www.pless.co.uk ). I am not
associated with them or recommending them.

Only when the router is in used. I guess this SpeedTouch Router must
have turned off certain port by default.
