my friend has AOL dial-up and he paid upfront for the year. he forgot to
cancel when the year was up and AOL renew it automatically and charged him
for another year. AOL said they cant cancel it and refund him the money (was
about £155/year for dial-up!!!). is this the case? has anyone had this
problem before?

He needs to read the Terms and Conditions for the service. There should be a
section in there for Termination of the contract.
He could argue that the terms are unfair and quote the Unfair Terms act.

It seems a few people have had this problem with AOHell (it not called
that for nothing). Here's one site where someone's has similar trouble:
http://www.complaints.com/directory/2004/may/27/8.htm
AOHell is quite well known for this sort of thing.
I also seem to recall an item about them on BBC's "Watchdog"
sometime ago.
