AOL over NTL, settings +

Hi All,

I was talking to someone today (having trouble connecting a Belkin
router etc) who sugggested they were subscribed to AOL but over NTL
cable? At first I thought they were confused ('users' <rolls eyes>)
but after a quick Google it seems they could be right (doh)?

So it would seem AOL require PPPoE and therefore an account / password
for the router (as with ADSL connections) but do you also need to
'tweek' the MTU/MRU (and do you typically get that option on cable
routers)?

Also .. it would also appear that the AOL over NTL users aren't capped
whereas straight NTL users (especially the 1M ones) are?

(I'm sticking with 300kbps and 30G / month for now) ;-)

It does now. Have just reinstalled my modem for about the fourteenth time
since this became a requirement.

Can't help you there as I use a modem.

That's correct. AOL has a special arrangemnt with NTL in the same way it
does with BT. Of course you're paying twice over, once for the AOL contract
and again for the NTL (or BT) line.

This is not true. It is possible to have an AOL connection over NTL
without taking a phone line or anything else from NTL. It's a set rate
of £24.99 regardless of whether you have any other services with NTL.

AOL's charge does not include the cost of line rental from BT or NTL.If you
haven't already got one or the other, you can't connect to AOL.

You don't need a phone line to use NTL broadband.

No but you need a NTL cable for which you have to pay. It's not included in
the AOL subscription.

You can have NTL broadband for £25/month without taking NTL TV or NTL
phone. Are you telling me that this is not the case with the AOL version?

AOL Broadband is only for those with an existing BT or NTL connection. AOL
does not provide lines of its own.

There is no charge for installing AOL. You still have to pay to install NTL
and any monthly fee which NTL charges. If not I would have it already as an
NTL cable runs past my back gate.
