My daughter lives in a basement flat.

Her landlord says she can connect to his broadband "through a wire." I
presume he means he will network her to his computer (he lives
upstairs). I presume this would be through a router.

His connection is via AOL.

If my daughter's laptop is wired to his AOL connection through a router,
can she then use non-AOL software (ie Internet Explorer) for the web?
She has no AOL stuff nor any interest in it.

Many thanks.

Yes, AOL is just an Internet connection at one level, the software is
just 'window dressing' and isn't needed if you don't want it providing
he uses a router. Make sure she has file sharing is turned off and a
firewall configured to not allow connections to her machine from him.

Yes.

Make sure she disables file sharing on the network connection.
