Hallo,

Just a quick question, wondered if anyone on here might know..

My brother is thinking of joining Aol's broadband service, and its
main use will be online games such as Q3 CS Kingpin etc

What he'd like to know is how does Aol's pings compare with other
broadband suppliers (he has used Blueyonder b4) ?

I've told him to be wary of Aol because I've experienced their dial-up
modem service and the pings on that were truly terrible, about 5x
worse than other dialup providers. Are the broadband pings slow too,
or do you get basically the same service from all BB providers? (by
that i mean within 10ms of each other)

Any help, info or advice much appreciated, thanks
-
Jak

DON`T, AOL`s broadband is terrible for pings. My friend has AOL Broadband
(Over BT Line) and gets a ping of over 140 to www.jolt.co.uk which is
terrible..

Not sure about the ping aspect of it, but if he wants to use more than
one computer online at some point in the future, you can only do it using
ICS or a proxy server afaik - it can`t be done using a router / modem.
I seem to remember someone saying your connection is in effect a VPN
which stops the connection being shared.

I could be talking out of my ass though, as i`ve never used AOhelL

A very quick comparison:

Ping statistics for 195.149.21.11:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 28ms, Maximum = 29ms, Average = 28ms

Thank you all for the helpful responses. I haven't used Usenet in a
while, I'd forgotten how useful it can be

140 Ping is really rough.. on most 3d games it would mean a big
disadvantage compared with faster pings..

I did a ping to Jolt myself (blueyonder) and got similiar results to
you guys, 28ms

Will pass on the remarks to my brother, he still has time to cancel as
he hasn't got the modem yet.

Any advice on which broadband provider to go for instead?
512k is enough, priced below 30 quid, anything with a decent ping will
be ok. I've heard Nildram isn't bad, and it's a good price at 22.99

Agree with Nildram. Pipex also offer FREE Activation - but it's a 12
month contract with that option. (£58 cancellation fee if you dont see
out the 12 months)

I would do a search on groups using google for AOL. There are other more
important things to consider than the pings. !!!!

Good Luck

Dave

Jolt and Nildram are "In Bed" to a certain extent so if your brother plays
on "Jolt Servers" it`s a good option to go with Nildram..
