Do you still have to use that crappy browser/email software they use with
Dial Up?

no, you can put the ID into a router and connect with that or use
Windows DUN icon then browse with your choice of browser.

Not sure about the mail though. Do other clients work with their
oddball mail system ?

Not quite it's even worse for BB users! They uploaded a new interface a few
weeks ago and nothing has worked properly since. On top of that AOL's mail
servers are beginning to crash with monotonous regularity in much the same
way as their news servers did a year ago. Things will get worse still if AOL
keeps its promise to upgrade all existing subscribers by "July", which I
very much doubt they will.

I know there are various third-party IMAP > POP3 interfaces available, but..
Anyone know if AOL will ever support POP3 directly?

That would require a huge capital investment by AOL-Time-Warner to replace
their IMAP servers with POP3 servers. Since they abandoned Usenet rather
than replace their Newsservers I would say that was very unlikely. All the
indications are that AOL-Time-Warner is cutting back on capital investment
rather than increasing it.
