Like the subject line says:

Anyone out there sucessful at connecting Dell Axim X30 to a Dlink
DI-614+?????

My shiny new Dell Axim (PDA with Built-in 802.11b and Bluetooth) doesn't see
my Dlink DI-614+ router no matter what I do. I've turned encryption OFF,
turned SSID on, turned 4x mode off, but nothing seems to work.

The netgear card in my laptop sees the router and ironically, despite the
fact it (the router) is theoretically a 802.11b device, the netgear card
sees the router a 802.11g device, although there is no way it even comes
close to "g" speeds!

The Axim works well at my office where I have an Orinoco AP600 AP which is
using WPA-PSK encryption, it works very well at my local sandwich shop which
offers FREE 802.11b wireless access, and it sees and connects quite well to
my neighbors <open> wrh614v1 Netgear router (which btw is also a 802.11g
device).

Honestrly, I'm about ready to junk the Dlink CRAP and just get Netgear. I've
had MUCH better luck with Netgear than Dlink. My netgear WG511t notebook
card (which I use at my office because it supports WPA-PSK) is so much
easier to use. I simply put it in the card slot and it is recognized without
any problem.

With my Dlink DWL-650+ (which I use in 4x mode with my home Dlink router). I
sometimes have to eject it a couple of time and re-insert it before it is
recognized (I only have Win98SE on my laptop). It is a real PITA.

SO if anyone can help on this (getting the AXIM to see the DI-614+) PLEASE
let me know, otherwise I'm going to have to junk this POS and get a new
router.

Thanks,

Aaron

I'll let you know on Monday or Tues. I have a DI-614+ Rev A in my
office and one of the employees in the adjacent office is anxiously
awaiting the arrival of his Axim X30 (with GPS).

Version A or B? (Two or One antenna).
http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp
Firmware version?
Current is:
Rev A: 2.33
Rev B: 3.43
Both were released last week. Upgrade? Don't forget to reset to
defaults after the upgrade.

Try turning off the speeds faster than 11Mbits/sec.
http://support.dlink.com/techtool/di...dv_perform.htm
http://support.dlink.com/techtool/di...h_wireless.htm
1. Check the "Tx rates" to 1,2,5.5,11" (not 22).
2. Turn OFF the 4x mode.
3. Disable WEP encryption.
4. Enable SSID broadcast.
I know that you've tried these, but try them all at once. It should
(famous last words) work.

When playing with WEP, try using binary keys instead of ASCII.

Nice review of Axim X30

Check to see if the SSID boardcast is on.
Try a power cycle on the router for 10 seconds.
If no signal still try to reset it.
You can try a crash recover but d/l the firmware first.
Hold the reset hole and power off and on the unit three times.
If that does not work then trash it.

Version "B" with (1) one antennae

I'm still using an older version of the firmware... I've heard horror
stories on DSLreports about people who upgraded ther firmware and the router
basically freaked out and started repeatedly rebooting, so, thus far
(despite the fact that I would like to use WPA-PSK) I've avoided upgrading
the firmware.

I may well do it now though, as I would REALLY like to get it working with
my Axim, and I really would rather use WPA over 256 bit WEP!

If the new firmware breaks the router though, I will probably just go ahead
and trash the thing and buy a new Netgear. I can't beleive how many problems
people have with upgrading Dlink firmware... really makes me wonder about
the company and there products.

I've already tried all the above (all at the same time) several times now
with no luck

I've always used HEX instead of ASCII
I'm at the point where I really think the chipset in this router is not
compatatible with the Axim.

Again, Thanks for your help!

Firmware upgrade is a tricky thing to do. If you think about it you are
rewriting the the routers code. I'm not suprised by how many people mess
it up. Alot of people don't even know what the frimware is for. They are
told to update it and they do. Now if you told a person to flash the
BIOS on there mainboard I bet they would be more careful and follow the
directions exact.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that D-Link frimware is the best
writen firmware. But out of all the equipment out there that D-link has
sold how many do you think have a problem? I would say 10% is a high guess.

I think with all companies you are going to have crap products and you
will have great one. Just a matter of luck of the draw.

The Axim finally arrived. It's a model X30 with both Bluetooth and
802.11. Works just fine with my DI-614+ with WEP 64bit. Installed
the AvantGo browser and are surfing way merrily. 802.11b range is
identical to a Dell something laptop with a cheapo SMC something
802.11b card. They both crap out at roughthly the same range. We
haven't tried everything (GPS, Bluetooth, Outlook replication, various
apps) but I would say it works just fine. No clue what's wrong with
yours.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply.

Since my last post I have updated the firmware on the router to the most
recent version (3.43 I think it was , dated July 22, 2004) and have since
been able to connect with both WEP and WPA-TKIP encryption, BUT NOT without
MUCH difficulty (especially with 128 bit WEP and most especially with WPA).
I also have problems obtaining an IP address from the router, both on the
Axim and on the laptop.

Sometimes it takes several re-boots of the router (and the Axim) to get
connected. OTOH at work with my Orinoco Proxim AP-600, I simply walk into
the office and turn on my Axim and I am connected with WPA-TKIP with
absolutely no hassle!

At home I CAN connect to the router with my laptop which has a Netgear 511T
card, but many times I have difficulty obtaining an IP address and end up
having to re-boot the laptop to get it to work (and obtain an IP - should
probably change to static IP). Again, at my office, I just walk in, open the
laptop and connect - no hassles.

Dlink equipment really seems to be SUBSTANDARD...

When I purchased the DI-614+ I also bought a DWL-650+ PC Card for my laptop,
and it is NEVER recognized the first time, either when I initially insert
the card, or when I bring the laptop out of sleep mode (after having the
card inserterd and finally recognized).

To get the card recognized (either when intially inserting the card, or
bring the laptop out of suspend/sleep mode), I ALWAYS have to go through a
MANY step process with the DWL-650+.

The steps are as follows:

I always have to insert the card, eject it, then re-insert it, wait for it
to show up, then stop it in the device list, eject it again, then finally
re-insert it. At this point the card is usable (pretty much the same process
when I bring the PC out of sleep mode as well).

However with my Netgear 511T PC-Card, all I have to do is simply insert it
(if it's not already in) and it is immediately recognized. If the card is
already in the slot and the Laptop is in sleep mode, as soon as I open the
lid and the machine resumes, the card works flawlessly!!! NO hassles.

I'm about to Junk BOTH Dlink Products and buy a Netgear router to match with
my Netgear 511T PC-card (this card is capable of 108mbps when matched with
the WGR624 router).

I'm DONE with Dlink!!!

Hopefully this post will warn others from making a BIG mistake by buying a
Dlink product.

DON'T BUY DLINK!!!!!!!!!!! It's not worth the headache!

Aaron

Judging by your multitude of connection problems, methinks that
something is wrong with your DI-614+. Mine works just fine with a
wide variety of laptops and wireless adapters. As previously
mentioned, I had to disarm the "4X mode" and disarm the 22MHz rate, in
order to get it to work reliably. Mine is also the Rev A (ARM7 CPU)
flavour while yours is the Rev B (ARM9 CPU). I sell/fix/setup a fair
amount of wireless hardware. The client radios are first tested
before delivery using this DI-614+. It works.

I dunno what to say about your problems with a DWL-650+. Weird, I
guess. Have you tried it on other laptops?

>DON'T BUY DLINK!!!!!!!!!!! It's not worth the headache!

Well, ok. Y'er entitled to an opinion. None of the cheapo wireless
manufactories make their own products and only rebrand various far
east products from multiple sources. You will find a wide variation
in quality in both hardware and software. Some product models have as
many as 5 vendors in their manufacturer of origin.

Instead of banning DLink, I suggest you extract the first 3 letters of
the FCC ID, and go to:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/c...nteeSearch.cfm
http://driverzone.com/fcc_id_search.htm
to determine the actual manufacturer. After doing a few of these,
you'll be able to better seperate the good, bad, and ugly products,
and without a generalization formed on the basis of 2 products.
