I've ordered sky £21 six mix package and as soon as its installed i'll be
adding the £5 monthly for the 8 meg broadband, anyone know if i'll be able
to use my outlook express to view the newsgroups, in the same way as i can
with ntl right now? (moving into new property with no ntl in the area).

Don't think so. You'll find someone using Sky whose posts come with path
.....! ams.xsnews.nl!news.germany.com!news.datemas.de!not-for-mail
IE not using a UK server at all.

Depends on how much traffic you want as to best options for you... $2.50 can
buy 5 GB/month if you hunt around.

but yes they 'carry' newsgroups if you subscribe to a 3rd party usenet
server such as www.individual.net or that provided by www.clara.net

If you want cheap (near to free, given US$/pound exchange rate) then try
TeraNews, but be aware it adds a signature advertising TeraNews... or,
if there's a deal on, www.news.astraweb.com 90 GB for $25 (without a
time limit on using it) will give you lots of text groups, and quite
a good quota for binaries, without costing a lot... $2.50/month from
some other service will give you 50 GB for the same cost, and each 5 GB
allowance will be valid only for a month, use it or lose it... so might
cost you $25 for a total far less than 50 GB... I use Astraweb as backup
and TeraNews for incidental access, while my ISP (Eclipse) offers GigaNews
as part of my service (no Easynet service here, and I don't use Sky anyway)

<http://www.usenetbinaries.com/> might also be worth trying (for free view
of different thumbnails off the various groups, so you can see before you
download the full post off a proper news server... 1 MB of d/l a day for
the free account on usenetbinaries, so thumbnails are about the limit)

I should make it clear the 'basic account' is a once only fee,
to give 50 MB a day for downloading...

Bottom of the list on the subscription page...
US$ 3.95 (about 2 quid)... checks user is 18+, I expect.

I just tested the service I was thinking of (newsgroup-binaries.com) and see
it does not allow posting... so only suitable for downloaders, and still the
need for another if one wants to post... (though, on the other hand, may be
of interest for someone who wants to be sure of anonymity :-)

Don't forget that Clara log everything and if you start accessing the wrong
groups, or groups they will not switch off due to illegal content, they will
report you to police. This is mainly for people that prefer uncensored
newsfeeds.
If you just prefer text newsgroups, there are plenty of free and reliable
ones about but you need to do a search in Google. Don't pay for a server
when there is no need.
