Personally I wouldn't touch a 24 month contract with automatic
renewal, no modem, mail, or news server, particularly as it is
carrier preselect.
A potential problem with carrier preselect is lack of capacity,
so calls fail at certain times of day, which can extend to lack of
backhaul bandwidth evenings.
There can be arguments and customer service problems
if it anything goes pear shaped.
Unsolicited cold calls are rarely the bargain they seem,
and as for sorting out direct debit problems, need I say
more.
Has he read the small print, I believe he can cancel
within the cancellation period.
..

There's nothing on that site that jumps out to you to just join the
service. No, I agree, it is a mess.

I did speak to them about trying to cancel, but it will cause all
sorts of problems, if I can get the thing working as it stands, I will
be happy.

Andrew.

Have a look at <http://www.fare-talk.com/members/distrib_login.html>

Eze-talk has an association with a company called Farepak.

Farepak are (still currently?) in liquidation ...

Should this be a worry, er... your call? :-)

I wonder which broadband service is being resold. BT?

Yup - saw the Farepak connection. I did explain to them about this,
however, they wanted to stay with them for now, and if they went bust
then they would deal with it. They are reticent of giving me much
information about the contract, and I didn't want to push.

The IP address they got was registered with a company called
www.186k.co.uk. The username was xxx@comuk. When we dialed in with
the router, it appeared to give a DNS server which wasn't responding,
so I had to use one of the Opendns servers on the router!

They are sending and receiving fine now with Google, and if they need
to change at any time, at least it will only be the router that needs
changing, and not the email address etc, which hopefully won't go bust
(Google).

Andrew.
