Just asking.

Apparently there are firmware versions out there for my router (ASR-8100 /
Safecom SAMR-4110) with UPNP and firewalls for example which aren't implemented
currently.

I did it on my Linksys wrt54g v 2.2 and it was easy. I went to the Linksys
website and d/loaded the latest firmware to my desktop...signed in to the
router, went to the admin page, then firmware upgrade, browsed for the file
and loaded it. I then just turned everything off and rebooted modem then
router and then PC.

Obviously as you have a different router some steps are going to be
different but it shouldn't be that difficult to work out. Whether it's worth
it or not is up to you...if it goes wrong you could end up with a brick
instead of a router, so do you really need those extra features?. Personally
i'd say go for it as a firewall in your router is a rather handy thing to
have.

The procedure looks a lot more complicated for my router.

You can get a reasonably cheap firewall box for £40 so if it's a
posible brick or £40 (depending on the router of course) I know which
way I would go...

Firmware flashing instructions can be found at
http://www.routertech.org/pages.php?page=20

A list of different firmwares can be found at
http://www.routertech.org/pages.php?page=19

And a bootable CD which contains a lot of these firmwares can be found
at
http://www.origo-repair.org.uk.

The SAMR-4110 is a renamed ASR-8100. The JMK firmware on the CD seems to
be the best all round one.

I had to use the bootable repair CD with my SAMR-4110 when it died about 18
months ago, it's worked fine ever since. I needed an Intel CPU based PC to
use it though, I borrowed a laptop.

Ah, you're presumably the Mr Mugwump who's responsible for the CD ?

Before I go and do anything rash I do want to make sure that I'm not going to regret
it. I got the CD yesterday actually but I'm curious why it has a choice of some 8 or
so firmware options. Why so many ?

Also I came across some comments IIRC that said the JMK firmware resulted in the
router needing rebooting every couple of days.

Also, there seems to be various advice as to whether you can flash the firmware via
the ethernet connection or USB.

My PC here does have an Intel chipset.

I re-flashed my 8400 with the latest safecom version on mugwump's cd.
The procedure was easy to follow and the router performed excellently
thereafter.

I did mine via USB

Jim.

I made the disc originally to give people a choice of the Origo/Safecom
firmwares available at the time and also some other firmwares from
different manufacturers (where they gave me permission). As a new
version was released by Origo/Safecom, I just added it to the disc and
didn't remove any.

Upgrade of a firmware can be done via ethernet providing it is only a
version upgrade. To change to a different version you will need to use
the USB flash method.

However the best method is to use the USB flash method. This does have
drawbacks in that it will only work with certain mainboard chipsets.
This is a shortcoming of the flash utility provided by Conexant.
