I've heard, on here I think that if you have an aol trial dial
up account, and then call to cancel it, and when they ask why you
are canceling, you tell them that you've decided to upgrade to
broadband, and go with a provider cheaper than aol, then they
will price match!

If I could get through the credit check, I'd go with NTLfreedom
(512k, 5gig / month cap, £17.99 a month, which includes a free
modem, and free signup), but I can't so AOL looks like a good bet
if they will give me their unlimited 512k package for £17.99 /
month!

But what am I letting myself in for? What's so crap about AOL
broadband? I've read here, that you don't have to use their
software to connect, which seemed to be the major sticking point.

Or if anybody else can suggest an ISP that gives you a free
modem, no installation fee, and more than 1 gig a month for about
£18 then that would be much appreciated. One with a newserver
with good binaries might be appreciated too, although not
essential.

Thanks, Alex.

Does it still install loads of proprietary crap installed on your
system? Have a google: http://tinyurl.com/4s69q

They don't give you a free modem but Virgin is £17.99 (3GB capped)
with no setup fee and no minimum term. They were doing deals on the
speedtouch modem when I signed up (£10) but no doubt you could pick
one up off ebay... Can't comment on binaries as I don't use them.

What about Demon Home 500? For only 2 quid more, i.e. £19.99 a month, you
get all that but without the capping.

No newsgroup access though I seem to recall. At the mo, I'm
leaning towards going with Wanadoos 1Mb package...

No, it doesn't. I've used AOL for about 4 years or so, and I'm now on
their 1Mb package for £29.99/month. I don't use any of the AOL
software, as I use Firefox as my browser and Thunderbird for my email
client.

AOL's become a hell of a lot better over the past 18 months to 2 years,
and I would definitely recommend them.

HTH!

Rob

I'm on Platinum 2 and apart from being relatively expensive, it's excellent!

PlusNet <http://tinyurl.com/24ymz> - I recommend them and save some cash.

My other ISP : UK Free Software Network <http://www.ukfsn.org>
UKFSN passes all profits to Free Software projects in the UK.
