Hey people,

I can get the Netgear wireless equipment for a good deal, but want to make
sure it's a good enough brand. I'd hate to end up having problems just to
save a buck or two.

What I want to do:
Be able to have complete access to my DSL internet connection on my laptop
from anywhere in my house. I also want to be able to print from that laptop
anywhere in the house. The issue is, the laptop will be my only computer in
the house so I won't have a "host" computer to run the printer through.

What I think I need:
(my laptop is on the way and will already have a 802.11g wireless mini pci
card)
* A 802.11g Wireless router
* A print server

I can get both of these (plus a free 5.8 cordless phone which I also need in
my office) for around $110 if I go with Netgear. It would be more with other
brands and I would also need to buy a good cordless phone.

Before I go ahead with this, I just wanted to check with you people here and
see if Netgear was an okay option for what I intend to use it for.

Thanks in advance for any and all help...

I'm running my home system on a Netgear ME102. Using a Linksys wireless
print server. No problems with the Netgear product.

At work, I'm using a Netgear ME102 to provide wireless services to a
laptop + two desktops. Again, no problems.

Several unhappy customers in uk.telecom.broadband who will never buy
another netgear product.

I use the MR814v2 as does a friend. We are both Network eng and work from
home. I have not had to power cycle or reboot in 3 months. So no problems T

Ive always used their products - never had any probs. Reputable company,
always early to market with new technologies at a good price. Downsides -
well occasionally they are a bit keen and you get a new product on the
market with some falky firmware - but thats about it....at least you know
they will be around in a year or so for some support rather than buying some
cheap no name brand which you cant get drivers for !

My FM114P wireless firewall router with print server is on 24/7 and
has been flawless for over 10 months. Many of those who have had
problems have said they have quickly gotten replacements under
warranty.

With all of the probably hundreds of thousands of various brands being
sold, there are very few reports of systemic problems in any of the
equipment. The most significant is the original version of Intel's
Centrino miniPCI card which had connectivity problems. Another is
version 4 of Linksys' wireless 4port router, but that was cleared up
quickly. Given this track record, any commercially available equipment
should work out of the box. There are sporadic problems as witnessed on
this newsgroup. There are problems with Microsoft's implementation of
Wireless Zero Configuration. All in all, it still looks to me that the
least expensive consumer equipment is the equipment of choice, and that
brand name plays little part in usability.

Just go trough the threads here and / or on uk.telecom.broadband and see how
many people have problems with Netgear kit / firmware / updates etc.
As someone already said, they rush large variety of kit on to the market
without proper testing let alone post sale technical support.
If it works out of the box, then fine. Any problems and you will be
struggling for days, phoning their support (in India !), tearing your hair
out. I did, returned the wretched thing and swore never ever to touch any
Netgear kit with a barge pole.
(Bought Draytek Vigor 2600We, set it up in 10 mins, haven't missed a single
bit since May installation)
Regards,
Martin

I've never had a problem with my Netgear wired router and Netgear
wireless router. I've had them plugged in for months and I've never
needed to worry about them. Some people in this newsgroup have an axe
to grind with Netgear. Do a search on Google Groups on some of the
responses from some people and you'll see what I mean.
