Hi all,

Was going to sign up a friend with Plusnet, but he doesn't want all
the extra benefits of Plusnet, and additionally likes the idea of
paying a slightly higher cost to get most calls included (i.e, the
Onetel packages). Just wondering what the quality of the service was
like, and also what sort of equipment do they give the customer?

Just wondring,
Andrew.

I was with OneTel and moved to PlusNet. I had problems with their accounts
department, poor customer service and tech support. PlusNet are far better.

Why not recommend that your friend signs up with PlusNet, but looks at other
inclusive call packages - I can point you in the right direction if
necessary.

OneTel used to be good when run by Ozzies, since takeover by Centrica their
customer service is poor, but I still use them for off peak calls.
Can't recommend their Internet service either, email servers are poor and
Usenet practically non existent. (And I am a Centrica shareholder!)
So when I got broadband in May 2003 I went with PlusNet and its been great,
just recently switched to 1Mb/s service
at even cheaper price of £14.99 per month. Two of us use it several hours a
day each, lots of large emails, but as we don't download
much music, videos or warez, we don't exceed the included 1Gb / m bandwidth.
But if you do, you just get charged a £2.00 more per 1Gb or slightly less if
you select a higher 'limit' i.e. pre-pay.
Your friend should consider using VoIP (phone calls over Internet), rather
then pay fixed fees for phone usage.
Regards,
Martin

I had Onetel as my ISP when using dial-up but terminated my contract when I
moved to BB. I had few complaints with Onetel; poor news service being the
main one.

However - I terminated my contract some time ago, paid my last monthly
charge at the beginning of September. NEVERTHELESS if I (or any one else)
send mail to my old onetel address I get NO indication that this address no
longer exists. This is annoying to say the least.

Is it typical ISP behaviour?

Frank

The usual is that the mailbox is kept alive, mostly I think to prevent
someone else signing up under the same username and thereby gaining
the ability to hijack your identity. (Think domain hijacking here..)

I *think* onetel have an 0845 access number, and I doubt if they
charge a fee for such an account beyond the 'local rate' callcharges.

Therefore you should be able to dialup on the 0845 and retrieve any
mail from any friends who don't know your new address. You may even
find that you don't need to signup and that just entering the charged
number into your old DUN will connect you. I don't know, I haven't
checked any of this but it is sort of standard practice. Have a look
at their dialup ISP page.
