I am thinking of using a wired network of 4 computers but the router
will be wireless (the router I am looking at in UK is Linksys
WRT54GSUK).

This is to allow for possible remote access being added in the future.

Are there any obvious drawbacks in such a set up and will it be
straightforward to implement using WinXP?

As long as you secure your wirless part of your router, Enabling Encryption
and I would also disable DHCP until you use the wireless, everything should
be great.

The WRT54G is a fantastic linux based router. Though I dont understand linux
much, I appreciate the great software available. The WRT54G is a very stable
router and I would recommend it even if you aren't planning on using 802.11g
wireless. I would recommend disabling the wireless access point in the
WRT54G, until you plan on utilising it. The WRT54G has even more features
available to use when running third party firmware. With little effort a
WRT54G can be customised to provide static routing, static DHCP, VLAN's,
QOS, VPN server etc... for more information visit http://linksysinfo.org/.
