Hi,

Anyone have any suggestions for a decent antenna supplier in the UK? I am
just looking for a small omni to extend the range of an Orinoco Gold card.

Many thanks,
Noel

Hi

Maplin in Nottingham (the larger of the two stores) Have an antenna in there
clearance section for £30 comes with a wall bracket as well.

I have not got any Wi-Fi my self yet as I hope to use it to get Broadband via
Wi-FI from a provider wrbb.net that will bring broadband to the wilds of
Lincolnshire.

My Village is in a hollow so its going to me difficult and I intend to make a
Colinear high gain at a fraction of the cost of a new one. I would need 802.11g
equipment but as to what would be the best to use I am unsure of yet
See below for colinear plans

Good Luck

Keith, I have emailed those guys with some technical questions and
received no response. I feel scam would be an understatement. Their
claims on their website are way from reality.

For exmaple "what equipment do I need? you can use any wireless
equipped laptop" or something like that. Yet their antenna is maybe 1km
away! Absolutely no way is that going to allow people to sit in their
lounge and surf on 100mW EIRP from an omni 1km away, not even close.

The fact that they have ignored my challenge to them suggests either
they are hiding something or can't be bothered. Either way, I wouldn't
deal with them even if they were the only option.

Why? Why make that antenna when that antenna is omnidirectional? You
only want to point at the WISP station, that colinear is completely the
wrong solution.

BTW, FWIW, I made one and found the simpler colinear to be a better
solution. Even then, you can make a much much more powerful antenna
from a tin can with higher gain that you can reasonably achieve at home
with a first attempt at the plans above.

Keith, an omni antenna is a poor choice for 'client' equipment. Since your
position is fixed and you're only interested in connecting to the fixed ISP
point of presence, you'll get better performance, less noise and better
security from a highly directional antenna. Highly directional commercial
antennas are less expensive than commercial omni (high gain) antennas.

If you've never built 2.4GHz antennas before and you really want to build
instead of buy, I would recommend you use a 'cantenna' design. They're
fairly directional and easy to build.

Like I said, I made one, the 8 segment one. Took flipping ages to strip
the foil from the LMR400, it's sort of bonded on instead of just peeling
off it seems.

Similarly, making the jig isn't hard but just as time consuming and the
end result was somewhat lacklustre. I think almost easier to make a
better 5dBi of the simpler design that works better than an attempt at
an 8 or 12dBi which has so many elements that they don't resonate
together but just end up cancelling each other out.

I'm no antenna design expert by any means but measuring and drilling one
hole in a tin can to get around 10-12dBi gain will surely beat any
attempt at the upper end of 12dBi of an omni for the first time builder.
Much easier to aim too.

David.
