Antenna Orientation???

If my wireless router has a single antenna and I want to put it up in my
attic so that it "blankets" my house with the signal - does it make sense to
rotate the antenna to point down so that the signal can reach directly below
it?

What might the broadcast pattern look like both horizontally and vertically?

Not sure how these antenna things work.

Most look like donuts.
