Try installing Netstumbler, or Boingo on your friends laptop, then he/she
could roam about in their property looking for a signal, if no signal found,
move your access point in to a different position and ask your friend to try
again. Repeat in as many different positions noting any results and try
again for a stronger signal, remember only a slight movement in any
direction is enough to loose a weak signal, esp in your conditions.
If no signal is picked up at all, you could try getting a higher db antenna
but this will not garantee a signal to your friend.
Using a Yagi or any other type of directional antenna could help, but
reflections and such could mislead you in to pointing it in the wrong
direction, so again you would have to experiment with different directions,
you could bounce it off buildings if your lucky enough to have buildings
arround you that bounce the signals from where you are to your friends
apartment, then yes a beam could possibly work for you.
Chances are your going to be outa luck
