Antenna extension question

This'll be a pretty basic question. I have a Linksys wireless router, and I
share my DSL line with my housemates. However, coverage isn't consistent in
our house.

It occurred to me that, if I could extend the antenna throughout the house,
it might help, and I have a three-story-tall stairwell where I could run an
antenna wire. (Wouldn't require the work I had to do to run a now-defunct
Ethernet line.)

My question is, would this help, and what's required to get it done?

http://www.freeantennas.com - Look at the templates.

In your case I would put the AP in the attic or top floor and place a
reflector on it so that it would enhance the signal towards the
building below it. Barring that I would try the same thing from the
basement.

In a word, no.

2.4 ghz RF energy is easily lost in coaxial cables and connectors. A run
of any significant length (more than few feet) will leave you worse off
than you were before.

The good news is that you can probably solve the problem by employing a
better antenna. Check here:

Properly located, and equipped with a better antenna, your AP can
probably server the whole house. Lots of metal in the floors or walls
will be a problem, of course, but odd are you can get it done.
