Antenna to boost wireless network

The heart of my wireless network is a Netgear DG 834G.

I want to improve the wireless range.

I have a choice of either a 5 dbi or a 9 dbi antenna. Which would you
choose and why?

Many thanks

Assuming they're both a similar type, 9dBi. Has most gain.

It's not easy to recommend a solution without knowing what the problem
is.

It depends on the circumstances. Greater dBi figures mean greater gain, and
greater gain means better range. But there is a catch: an antenna with
greater gain will be more directional; that is, it gives you more gain in
some directions at the expense of gain in other directions. So, an antenna
with higher gain will give better range in some directions but lower in
others.

There is also the issue of legality for unlicensed use, which raises some
interesting questions.

Alex

Yes it is. An antenna with more gain is ALWAYS a good thing.

I was considering this one:

or one of the 9dbi's from here

At what stage is a license required?

The limit is given in terms of EIRP (100mW IIRC), so it depends on the
transmitter power as well as the antenna gain. But unless you are using an
amplifier, I wouldn't worry about it.
