After finding some places like Panera Bread
are using the Proxim / Orinoco AP-2500 controller,
<http://www.proxim.com/products/wifi/ap/ap2500/>

I also discovered that Boingo is using a different box -

Hey everyone,
Check out this cool Hotspot solution from Ebay. It is for $450.00. Is
this a good deal? It can do accounting stuff where people login and
are tracked for minutes usage and roaming. Sounds like something that
i need since i'm a hotel manager. I got quotes from Wayport and Boingo
being outrageously expensive, especially Wayport(9k-10k). It is on
Ebay right now.

A bad bet, this one.

First of all, the Cisco 1600 is in "end of life" or "end of sale" status
with Cisco, meaning that "...it cannot be ordered and may no longer be
supported..."

Buying used Cisco gear is, in general, a very bad idea because of
Cisco's draconian licensing terms for the operating systems and other
software required to make their hardware work. By the time you have paid
for the required "examination" of your second-hand hardware, and for a
valid license of the IOS and other features, you will have spent as much
or more as you would have for a new piece. Cisco is evil. There are many
other vendors, such as Adtran, with comparable products and none of the
ridiculous licensing issues.

Lastly, virtually all of the relevant functionality of this unit can be
had with the D-Link DSA-3100, which is a current and supported product.
A better choice still would be the Handilink WSG-4000, which also
features the gatway features AND has the 802.11b access point built in.
Both the WSG-4000 and DSA-3100 sell for about what the Ebay seller is
asking for the Cisco offering.
