Thanks again Mark. I'll have to give it some more thought. Plusnet extra
fibre (21.49UKP/month on my exchange) does not look too bad. Streaming @
10Mb/s is fine but some of the download limits look a bit worrying.
I have had a response from Plusnet who have said that a two step migration
starting at ADSL2+ and a little later moving to FTTC is not a problem. They
also indicated that I don't have to use the offered router (saving the P&P
charge) although this will limit some of the support. This is good because
I'm using a wireless repeater to get to the security camera in the garage
and this works best with a WDS enabled router.
I'm currently with ADSL24, who resell the BE LLU, and found their support
not too bad but their FTTC offerings appear to be over-priced. This does
though make me keen to go with someone who has UK based support.
Most of our current problems are with BT. I was told by the guy came to fix
the line, again, a couple of months ago that the Aldershot exchange is now
the least reliable in the country and I have to agree. It would be great if
the face plate on the master socket had some sort of quick-release catches.
For the last few months we have problems with the up rate on our broadband.
While the down rate of around 4Mb/s is rock solid. The up rate keeps
dropping from what used to be a stable 1Mb/s to around 200kb/s and then runs
at a noise margin of only 3dbs while the down rate is a solid 6dbs. If I
reset the router then while it starts at 1Mb/s it keeps breaking and
dropping and reducing the up rate until it stabilises and takes a couple of
hours to sort its self out. I can often provoke the problem and sometimes
even fix it by making an incoming phone call. The trouble is that there are
4 parties involved, me, ASDL24 who resell BE carried over BT and I just
can't face the hassle it will take to get it fixed. I hope going to FTTC,
using new equipment in a local cabinet, will make life a bit easier. I have
seen the new cabinet installed and its only about 200 yards away!
Virgin cable passes us but I hear so many complaints that for me it is
definitely a non-starter.
Its not urgent yet so I still have time to find the best balanced offering.
