Another FTTC Slippage

In the last few days FTTC on the Aldershot exchange has slipped from July
1st to Sept 30th having already slipped from June.

Not unexpected but a little bit annoying. I have to give 3 months notice
with my current ISP and was aiming at 15th August so have already given
notice. I'll now have to arrange something else. I'm reluctant to go to BT
so are there any others that will let you take up non FTTC with a promise of
upgrading you to FTTC when it eventually arrives? I was sort of looking at
Plusnet. I am currently ADSL2+ via BE LLU (Wholesale) and getting about 4M
in & 1M out on a piss-poor attenuation of around 58db.

Perhaps one of the smaller ISPs, Fast, Goscomb, Merula, IDNet ? :-

Full list of FTTC ISPs here:-

I'm with IDNet, I found them very helpful providing me with FTTC, despite
being too far from the cab to fall within BT's >15Mb/s predicted speed. Actual
speed 29 Mb/s.

Thanks Mark. That was an interesting spreadsheet.

I was thinking about something "unlimited" on the basis that broadcasting is
going on-line and rapidly expanding but that does seem to seriously limit
ones choice.

Plusnet still looks good with up to 120GB down/month and also provide a
cut-price rate for my exchange. Oddly they limit the up-rate to 2 Mb/s,
compared to 10Mb/s for many others and while I'm not planning to be
streaming anything out it does imply a lack of future-proofing.

I think I'll have to talk to them to see if they will provide an upgrade
path to FTTC from ADSL if I move to them before fibre gets enabled.

Be aware of their traffic shaping policy for the FTTC packages though !

Thanks again Mark. I'll have to give it some more thought. Plusnet extra
fibre (21.49UKP/month on my exchange) does not look too bad. Streaming @
10Mb/s is fine but some of the download limits look a bit worrying.

I have had a response from Plusnet who have said that a two step migration
starting at ADSL2+ and a little later moving to FTTC is not a problem. They
also indicated that I don't have to use the offered router (saving the P&P
charge) although this will limit some of the support. This is good because
I'm using a wireless repeater to get to the security camera in the garage
and this works best with a WDS enabled router.

I'm currently with ADSL24, who resell the BE LLU, and found their support
not too bad but their FTTC offerings appear to be over-priced. This does
though make me keen to go with someone who has UK based support.

Most of our current problems are with BT. I was told by the guy came to fix
the line, again, a couple of months ago that the Aldershot exchange is now
the least reliable in the country and I have to agree. It would be great if
the face plate on the master socket had some sort of quick-release catches.

For the last few months we have problems with the up rate on our broadband.
While the down rate of around 4Mb/s is rock solid. The up rate keeps
dropping from what used to be a stable 1Mb/s to around 200kb/s and then runs
at a noise margin of only 3dbs while the down rate is a solid 6dbs. If I
reset the router then while it starts at 1Mb/s it keeps breaking and
dropping and reducing the up rate until it stabilises and takes a couple of
hours to sort its self out. I can often provoke the problem and sometimes
even fix it by making an incoming phone call. The trouble is that there are
4 parties involved, me, ASDL24 who resell BE carried over BT and I just
can't face the hassle it will take to get it fixed. I hope going to FTTC,
using new equipment in a local cabinet, will make life a bit easier. I have
seen the new cabinet installed and its only about 200 yards away!

Virgin cable passes us but I hear so many complaints that for me it is
definitely a non-starter.

Its not urgent yet so I still have time to find the best balanced offering.

This is true but is a complete red herring. PN is run as a separate entity
from BT.

Oh agreed, all I was doing was pointing out the ownership of Plusnet
to the OP, who may have been ignorant of the fact. Depending on his
reason for wishing to avoid taking service with BT - dislike of the
company or experience of poor service in the past - such info may have
influenced the OP

I don't have any particular general view either way but some people's
obsessive overall hatred of BT is not rational. I don't like their, or
anyone else's foreign call centres but the engineers and jointers who worked
flat out for three days replacing the stolen underground cables deserved
masses of praise. As for Plusnet they have served me well though there have
been the occasional lapse.

BT is a curates egg. Wholesale and Openreach are pure gems. And make
mots of the profit. BT reiatl is an abomination and should be euthanased.
