Hi All,

It's now 2 weeks I bought that bloody USR8054 Wireless Turbo Access
Point & Router and so far, my nice laptop is still wired... :-( I
have not been able whatsoever to get any kind of wireless connectivity
between the router/AP and my PCMCIA card.

I think I already read 10 times the whole manual and I know the USR
website by heart, but still no solution.

I also searched on the Net and as I found the best advices here I'm
giving it a try....

Apparently the USR8054 doesn't like to be disturbed by another
wireless network. I know there's another guy somewhere in my building
with a wireless connection as my PCI card detects another network
("wallaby" or something like that). So I switched the channel et tried
them all: still nothing.

The strange thing is that sometimes, for 2 sec, I get a message on the
laptop "Connected to USR8045", so apparently there's something but it
is dropped within the second.

From the config point of view, I suppose it's good, I tried with and
without WEP, in Infrastructure and AdHoc mode, using different TX
rates and different channels. I reinstalled 5 times the PCI card and
reset 10 times the router.

Would anyone have an idea where I could start to search?
Do you think it could be another WIFI network "overlapping" mine?
Or did I got a defective one from the shop?

Ok it's 2am now, I'm goin' to bed

Thanks in avdance for any advice or comment

Have a nice day

Thomas

Have you setup TCPIP properly? You must set your notebook tcpip properties
to"
IP adres 192.168.123.1
gateway 192.168.123.254
dns 192.168.123.254
set your USR utility on infrastructure
Look if you get a connection than start your browser surf to 192.168.123.254
to configure your router. Does this not work, go back to the shop with your
notebook and the other stuff, and try a different one. You can also try to
install it on a different partition under win98.
Good luck!

Depends what address your router gets. Mine is 192.168.1.25, and it doesn't
do DNS.

Can you always see the name of your wireless router listed in the "site
survey" panel on the laptop? If so, this would confirm that it is the
actual radio connection that is not holding, rather than the TCP/IP
network connection. In this case, you need to look first at the
properties of the wireless card itself and the wireless part of the
router. Start with all security features, encryption, filters, firewalls
etc switched off, or you'll never get anywhere as there would be too
many variables.

Apply the golden rule of only changing one thing at a time, and if it
doesn't improve anything and you don't know what it is supposed to do,
change it back again. The first thing I would check is if the power
output level on the laptop wireless card is set to anything other than
maximum, or if there is a feature called "power saving", in which case
switch it off, because this made a difference to one of the three
laptops I have had to deal with. Good luck.

Rod.

Actually I activated the DHCP server on my router and I'm filtering by
MAC address. I triple checked these settings and my notebook MAC
address is correctly listed in the "allowed" MAC addresses. I tried
with and without that setting anyway and so far it didn't help. DHCP
works fine with my wired PC's by the way.
I can browse and connect to the HTTp interface of the router from my
PC connected with a RJ45 cable, but god know why, I can't get
connectivity between my card and the router...
