Another broadband saga

Hi,
My daughter just moved around the corner from one flat to another in a
new building. Previously she'd had the Telewest Blueyonder service
which she was quite happy with. On trying to migrate her Blueyonder
service to the new flat she was told first of all that there was no
official record of her new address on Blueyonder's database and later,
once the address was sorted out, that the Telewest cable did not come
close enough to her new residence.

So, she had a BT line installed specifically for the purpose of
Broadband. The BT person she spoke to asked her if she was going to
purchase a BT Broadband service and she replied that she hadn't
decided which ISP she was going to use.

Once the line was installed, she attempted to subscribe to the Tiscali
Broadband 2MB service and when she put in her new telephone number to
ensure the viability of the service she received the following
message:

"Tiscali Broadband is not available

A check on your telephone line 01738442019 shows that for technical
reasons we cannot provide you with broadband.

Factors like distance from your local exchange and line quality,
affect our ability to provide you with a good quality broadband
service. When there is any doubt, we prefer not to supply broadband to
avoid disappointment.

We are sorry we can't provide you with Tiscali Broadband."

She phoned Tiscali to enquire what the problem was and they replied
that it was because the phone line was too new for the service to be
verified. They said she should wait 48 hours and try again.

Three days later she tried again and it came up with the same problem.
She then tried to subscribe to Wanadoo.
Wanadoo gave the following message:

"You have a service on your phone line that won’t work with broadband.
This could be FeatureNet, TPON, DDI, Fibre or an alarm system. Before
you can join Wanadoo Broadband you’ll need to contact your phone
provider and have this service removed."

That's pretty much the story. Could anyone please offer any advice on
this situation?

I don't think it's a good idea to publish your daughter's phone number for
the world to see.

1) Don't go with Tiscali or Wanadoo

2) Call BT and ask them what the problem might be

1. Don't use Tiscali
2. Use the www.bt.com/broadband checker instead of some of the other
story generating machines :-

"For Telephone Number 0173844xxxx on Exchange PERTH

Your exchange has ADSL broadband.

Our initial test on your line indicates that you should be able to
have an ADSL broadband service that provides 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps
download speed. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps
service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply
the broadband service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to
confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to
purchase.

Thank you for your interest. "

so, she can have 1M and not 2M. Several ISPs only use 2M connections
and are too incompetent to handle a 1M line. Go to Metronet or another
fixed speed operator, or one with a bit more clue.

The engineer bit only arises if its provided and fails to work.

Tiscali - dialup speeds at Broadband prices, see
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...&Board=tiscali

AOL - the unlimited ISP of choice for heavy downloaders.

Doh "
Anyway a check with BT broadband says ....

For Telephone Number 0xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx on Exchange PERTH

Our initial test on your line indicates that you should be able to get
Broadband from BT with speeds up to 1Mb, which is up to 20 times faster
than dial-up. At the moment, your telephone line is unable to support
our 2Mb speed broadband package. Also, due to the length of your line,
an engineer visit may be required to set up your broadband service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to
confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to
order.

I wrote this with my dad's help, we didnt notice that the full
telephone was in the message. Is there anyway we can remove it?

Not once it's propagated round the entire news server system, no. All you
can do is request a change of number from BT. Explain what happened and
they may not charge you (but don't quote me on that).

I'd ask for a new number from BT before the pervs, weirdoes and PlusNet
sales people start telephoning you

It's too late to remove the message. Don't worry about it. My number
"leaked" years ago. It's never caused any problems. Nobody has ever
phoned me!
