i know theres 512, 1mb and 2mb connections around, but what determines the
speed? is it kit/adsl tariff, or is it ISP tariff.

ie - i get btbroadband 500 plug & go, can i then use a 1mb tariff supplied
by xxxx ISP?

Yeah sure, nobody bothers to check and they leave the system open to trust.

Everyone just upgrades them selves to 2Mbit of course

Its determined at the DSLAM end, by some means or other - probably hard
wired or switch activated afaik

Better just farting than posting comments that are guaranteed to
generate sarcastic replies. I assume your original post was in the
"humorous" vein

no actually......

i ask this cuz with ISDN (that i have now) i have a choice between 64k and
128k, which is determined by what number i dial to my ISP. obviously
incuring a higher charge.

i wondered if ADSL worked in a similar fashion, but it depended on what ISP
number/tariff you were on.

you dont dial its hard-wired. the dial-up paradigm is used for
authentication only.

(a) it wouldn't work and (b) you'd be paying twice. Just go straight to
xxxx ISP and leave BT Broadband out of it.

i know that too......but does it have some sort of speed varification? to
determine weather it's 512/1024/2048?

it has to have SOMETHING that determins line speed or else using a peice of
wire, we`d all be downloading like a T3 line.

this is what i`m trying to find out, what determines the line speed; is it
hardware kit, or is it the ISP tariff?

The vast majority of ISPs (all?) use BT's IPstream500 service for
domestic connections (50:1 contention). This is set at 576Kb/s down and
288Kb/s up (Firmware in the DSLAM?).
The business products use IPStreamS which allows up to 2Mb/s (Different
DSLAM to IPStream500, hence the requirement to 'cease & provide) if you
want to change from 50:1 to 20:1).
There is also DataStream which some ISPs are using/planning to use for
consumer 1Mb &2Mb. This requires some extra kit in the exchange I
believe and only becomes cost effective (for the ISP) if 10 or more
people on an exchange get it.

In a nutshell, your speed is decided by which bit of kit you terminate
to at an exchange.

That is my understanding of the situation. I may be wrong and am open to
correction.

H Tim,

Just to clear this up, your connection speed is determined by the
equipment your line gets plugged into at the exchange when it is
activated. To change speeds, a BT engineer has to attend the exchange
and move your line to equipment configured for the new speed. They
will then bill your ISP at the wholesale cost for the speed you are
connected to.

Just about all DSL hardware can support at least 8 Mbps, so no changes
are required on the 'end user' side when a speed change is performed.

Regards,

Ian
