Annoying connection issues

Hi all,

I've got a Plusnet ADSL connection and I'm using a 3com wireless
router/modem to connect to the internet.

It usually works reasonably well, but these last few days I've been having a
frustrating problem.

I play a lot of Battlefield online, and every 5-10 minuites I get about 5-10
seconds of 'Connection Problems Detected', which prevents me doing anything.
I also use Teamspeak - when this occurs, I can no longer here anybody on TS.

Curiously, however, everyone can here me whinging about my connection
problems.

So, it seems that every so often I loose downstream bandwidth completely for
10 seconds at a time.

Any ideas? Rebooted the router several times.

If you have patched BF1942 to 1.16b recently then do a pbweb update to get
the latest PB client, then go into bf1942 multiplayer screen and select ADSL
or higher in the bottom right and conrner and then save settings.

Make any difference?

Cheers. Will try that tonight and report back.

If it is this though, seems odd, as it appears I cannot receive any data at
all during this small period - ie, I cannot hear people on Teamspeak.

I can't be sure but I'm sure its happening in regular browsing as well.
Every so often, nothing for 5-10 seconds..

In which case it's not PB causing youtr problems then. PB is causing this
type of problem for some people though.

Get the free copy of pingplotter from www.pingplotter.com and run it at
about 1 packet every 10 seconds to the game server while you are playing and
take a look at the graph afterwards. Lots of red means a problem, but at
least the trace will help identify where. Post a link to a copy of the graph
if you want an opinion. (look under the file menu to save a graph).

Hi Michael,

Does the problem only occur when you are playing Battlefield or have you
noticed it at other times too? Certainly seems like a strange problem,
hopefully Josey's sorts it out.
If it doesn't I would try and look out for it at other times and see if
there's a pattern to it.

With Regards,

Dave,

It would appear that it is happening at all times, but I only notice it when
I'm playing BF as it directly affects the game.

It's only started since last night. Before that, it was fine.

The TS thing tends to suggest its only an issue for incoming data..

Can confirm this now. Just downloaded pingplotter. Download paused half way
through the download, then 5-6 seconds later, carried on again.

Very annoying, rebooted router several times. Whats up here?

Just done that - basically, immediatly after it happened again I checked the
graph. I had a nice big red mark for *all* points, even those within
Plusnets network.

Any ideas?

I had a very similar experience this very morning using MSN Messenger.
Every 8 minutes on the dot incoming data would stop for about 6 to 10
seconds and then resume, yet data were still going out from my PC. My
voice could be heard but I could not hear the other party for that period.

A reboot and a new connection seemed to cure it. I'd love to know what was
going on. I kept checking the firewall log but there was absolutely
nothing there to indicate a cause.

I've had problems with ADSL home routers when running lots of
connections through, it seems they can't cope with them all and start
behaving strangely. I found that with my first router (a DLink
DSL-504T) when connecting in from the outside the session would work
fine for a while then would freeze. I then typed more text and quit
the connection, then when reconnecting would find that the text I
typed after the lockup had appeared on the screen of the remote
system. I've since replaced the DLink with a Belkin ADSL/Wireless
job, outgoing connection issues have vanished, I've not tested
incoming yet.

Have you tried turning off the firewalling? The Belkin had the same
problems as the DLink until I turned off firewalling, you can't do
that on the DLink without disabling NAT too but on some routers,
e.g. the Belkin, you can.
