I currently use AT&T dialup service using kppp under Red Hat 9,
(2.24.20-8) with Ximian, Mozilla, etc. Everything works fine.

Now I'm considering DSL, and AT&T DSL service in particular. I've not
been able to get definitive information on what software/configuration
is needed. The AT&T reps who answered my posting on the
worldnet.help.dsl newsgroup said the following

This may all be true, but I don't know what it memans in practical
terms, and it doesn't tell me what I have to do.
Can someone say, in 'newbie' terms, what has to be done to use AT&T DSL?

Any first hand experiences out there?

Will Ximian, Mozilla, Netscape work?

Red Hat 9 contains both pppoE and stunnel. What do I do with them?

Will the Red Hat 9 network configuration wizards (GUI's) take care of
everything the way they did for dial-up service?

Thanks for any info you provide.

-Al

PS I've read the appropriate HOW-TO's but can't see the forrest for the
trees.

The easiest way to get DSL working is usually roaring penguin:

You should have it up and running in a few seconds.

Huh?

I'm not sure what "'newbie' terms" means.

I've never used PPPoE or ADSL.

Yes, if everything is set up correctly.

What you should do for PPPoE depends of what "contains ... pppoE" means.
I have no idea what you should do with stunnel.

Beats me.

In the realm of "any info:"

Support for PPPoE can be compiled into the 2.4.20 kernel, although
I can't say whether RH did so or not. But you need at least pppd
2.4.2b3, the source for which is available at ftp.samba.org in
/pub/ppp. You may be able to find newer a CVS version if you look
around that site long enough.

The README.pppoe file in that source describes what needs to be done,
and the author claims section "2. Using PPPoE" is a "quick guide for
getting PPPoE working." He is likely right. The file README.pppoe can
also be found at ftp.samba.org in /pub/unpacked/ppp.
