Greetings fellow wireless users...

I have an Ambicom WL1100-CF card I use with my HP iPAQ 2215 all the
time and that has been extremely reliable. I've recently purchased a
Hawking Technologies omni antenna with a cable extension that I'd like
to mount to my car to survey 802.11 with. I've found that holding the
PPC 2215 while surveying is very convenient, but obviously need the
external antenna.

I need assistance from someone who understands surface mount
technology that could give me advice where I can solder leads onto the
WL1100-CF to make an external connection. I've got experience doing
this type of work, but I'm not familar with identifying the
components.

The following links are to graphics of the guts of the WL1100-CF that
I took apart. Amazingly, it was quite easy without causing damage
whatsoever. I am hoping that someone can offer assistance, as this
card is very popular, being realtively cheap and available at any Best
Buy store.

Thanks very much in advance- I'm hoping this will be interesting to
many folks. Please feel free to email me directly.

Ambicom WL100-CF Wireless users-

As a followup, here is what I have found through testing on my own;

I parked my car on the fringe range of my wireless AP at my home, and
put the omni outside on top of my car. I connected leads to probes
and the antenna fitting, and tested numerous times around what I
identified as the dielectric chip antenna at the top of the Ambicom
WL100-CF card. I got obvious gain in reception just by probing off
and on.

I sacrificed the converter lead that came with the Hawking
Technologies omni antenna, and soldered the prepared lead to the
dielectric chip antenna.

I tested the card in the house, and it continued to work without the
omni connected. I again went in my car to the fringe area of the AP,
and connected and disconnected the antenna to the new lead repeatedly.
Using the strength meter from the Ambicom utility, I'm getting on
average about 19.5% strength gain in reception with this omni antenna.

I had to use a Dremel tool to carefully drill a groove into both top
peies of the antenna cover for the card to reassemble it, but that
proved no problem, and the reassembly went with no other problems.

I am no expert, but I am surprised how easy this was to complete, and
would recommend that others not shy away from it.

A CF card with an external antenna lead!

Regards-
