Good day! I have returned to the net from a long
sebaticle, only to find it has gotten rough and hostile.
To make a long story short, I set up my modem in a older
computer and am trying to network it ( my older computer )
to my good one. I have instaled the D-Link Airplus Xtreme
G 2.4 Ghz in one computer and an ethernet card in the
other. The ethernet card is pluged into the router. I have
tried everything I could find out about getting the
computers to see each other to no avail. Can you help me??

The setup doesn't make much sense to me. A D-Link Airplus Xtreme is a
router, which is designed to connect one computer to the internet. Normally
to connect one computer to another, you use 2 ethernet cards connected
directly or through a switch. For more information on the router, try the
website http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=6 and check out their free tech
support. I have my computers connected through a Linksys router which has a
built in switch. Their tech support walked me right through the
configuration.

Eric- The original post states that the installation of a Dlink card is in a
computer. That is not a router. They are obviously trying to make two
computers network wirelessly, one wired directly to a wireless router and
one with the Dlink card THROUGH the wireless AP on the router.

To the original poster: more info is needed.
How is your router connected to the internet? DSL, Cable, some other way
like dialup using ICS?
What type of router are you using?
Are the two computers in the same subnet?
Do both computers share the same workgroup name?
This is just a start as there are more issues to address.

I use a Dlink DI624 router connected to a Cisco DSL modem( router). I have
three computers wired directly to the router and four wireless, including a
wireless print server. ALL machines can both access the internet and the
local network without problems. I have W98SE, W2K, and XP.

Post back with the additional info for more help.

The D-Link Airplus Xtreme is indeed a router. You can look it up on their
website. The poster claims the D-Link device is connected to one computer
with the other computer having an ethernet card attached to it. To network
2 computers requires a switch. If the D-link is indeed a separate switch
device with a card to connect wireless to it in one computer, that allows
the other computer to hook into it with a cable, it might work. More
information is needed.

The easy way to set up a home network is to get a switch or router/switch
combo device and read the manual for it or call their tech support. I use
the Linksys switch/router and their tech support walked me through the setup
with no problems. Tech support is a free phone call, and when I reloaded
Windows on both machines and couldn't make the network work a couple years
after getting the switch/router, they walked me through it again no problem.
