all kinds of new problems with my network

It's been a long time, but from what I remember, when I did an ipconfig /all
I used to see the address of my router listed as the default gateway, now I
see the address of my ISP

I tried setting my router's IP as the default and connectivity was lost.
So I set it back to the ISP by releasing\renewing

I went to the admin page of my router and noticed that it had 0.0.0.0 for
the following;
IP
subnet
default gateway

I tried forcing release/renew on my router but it still comes up with
0.0.0.0

Is that indicative of a problem? Could my ISP be blocking the use of
routers?

I'm not a networking expert, so this may be no big deal, but it seems
strange to me...

Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Of course, I have restarted everything in what I believe to be the correct
order.

Thanks,
Steve

What IP was showing 0.0.0.0? LAN interface or WAN Interface?

It sounds to me like you (or somebody) changed some wiring. Make sure
the WAN connection of the router goes to the "modem" and that the PC
is hooked into (one of) the LAN connection(s) on the router.

Hi Chris,

It just says IP, so I'm guessing it's the external IP? Like what I would
see if I went to tracert.com?

Thanks for the reply!

You got me excited there for a minute, because sure enough, the modem wasn't
plugged into the WAN port and yes, there was frantic rewiring awhile ago to
get ReplayTV up and running

So I just changed the wires to be correct (Modem to Router::WAN and PC to
other switch port on router) and tried to renew/release the information on
the router, it still has 0.0.0.0

I tried rebooting the router, no difference.

One thing I did notice that is different is that my PC's ipconfig did pick
up the routers as the default gateway, but no connection to the internet
could be made(I'm assuming this is due to the fact that the router is unable
to get the correct information from ISP's DHCP server)

I now have the PC directly connected to the modem so that I can respond to
the NG

Since you can access the router via http I would guess that the WAN port is
0.0.0.0. Make sure that the router is set to recieve IP config dynamically.
If it is set to static then the value could be 0.0.0.0 by default.

Normally when I add a router, I make it responsible for PPPoE (login)
rather than the PC. That requires configuring the router, normally by
accessing some pages it serves up to, e.g., 192.168.0.1 (or some such,
as described in its documentation). At the same time, you would
configure its local DHCP server / NAT component.

probably it needs to be configured

Perhaps your ISP has registered the MAC address of your PC, and you
need to use MAC spoofing on the router to avoid being locked out.

Hi CJT,

I think I have a broken router. It can't get any valid data from my ISP, I
have tried everything including new firmware ;(
