AKADNS - Problem browsing the web

I have one machine that is having a problem browsing the web.

When I ping a site, like www.microft.com, it will ping
www.microsoft.akadns.net instead and return something else.

There is clearly something on this computer that is causing the DNS to get
messed up.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thank you,
Gary

Maybe qhosts virus. See:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...an.qhosts.html

Or maybe some nasty spyware. See:
Spybot Search and Destroy

Or:
Adaware

I think that's normal, Gary. When I ping www.microsoft.com I get
www2.microsoft.akadns.net. A site as big as microsoft.com is probably
distributed over several servers.

By the way, Microsoft web sites don't respond to pings.

You know...you're right. Perhaps that is a bad test. I was pinging to
determine if her DNS was working correctly since she couldn't bring up any
web pages. I saw that...and recalled something about some spyware that
would redirect your DNS to random numbers.

I think I need to look at her machine again now. The other response to my
question was the kind of response I was expecting...but now I unclear what
the symptoms are other than the she cannot access the web.

I'll be back!

Thanks,
Gary

If you ping a site like microsoft.com or google.com (drop the WWW, since
that will redirect you to whatever web server they're running from, not
necessarily their actual host domain) if you get back a response like:

Pinging microsoft.com [207.46.245.222] with 32 bytes of data:

That's all you need to know that DNS is working. Whether or not the ping is
returned is immaterial. The name microsoft.com is resolved to the address
207.46.245.222 so you're resolving names. You might want to confirm that
another PC gets the same address returned as a confirmation that it's being
CORRECTLY resolved - that's an entirely different issue though.
