Regarding the AirPort extreme base stations with the external antenna
connectors.: When an external antenna is connected, does it work with (in
tandem with) the internal antenna? Does adding a directional antenna take
away from the near-in performance?

Thanks,

When the AirPort Extreme Base Station boots, it detects a connnected Dr
Bott antenna and disables the internal antennas. If you unplug the
antenna and don't restart the base station, you'll have *very* poor
signal strength. With other antenna brands, you might have to start up
the base station with a resistor attached to the antenna connector, then
unplug it and connect the antenna.

If you are very near any antenna, you'll get some signal; but
directional antennas sacrifices signal strength to their sides and rear
in order to boost it toward their front.

"The ExtendAIR Direct focuses the wireless coverage to a 65 degree
"beam" in one direction."
