Airlink101 Super-G router with Verizon DSL

I'm setting up a two-computer system for a friend and neighbor. (My own
system is wired using a DI-604 which works perfectly.)

This Airlink101 wireless router was really cheap -- $23 at Fry's -- and the
payback seems to be that Verizon doesn't support it. I don't mean it
doesn't work -- I mean Verizon doesn't tell you how to install it. Using
the procedures in the kit, it does not connect to Verizon through the
Westell 6100 modem. I've found references to people using this router with
Verizon on the Internet but no word on how they made it work.

Verizon doesn't seem to recognize that this brand exists, but does say that
certain brands of routers require the modem to be in "bridge mode," and
gives instructions for making that setting. I don't know whether that
applies to this one or not. The idea is that authentication and Verizon
logon would be handled in the router instead of in the modem.

For specifics:

Verizon DSL
with Yahoo! (which, btw, I consider almost a virus, but hey, it's not my
system)
Westell 6100 DSL modem
cat5 wired to Airlink101 wireless router
cat5 wired to Gateway P4/3.06Mhz/1GBDDR400 running Windows XP Media Center
Edition
+wireless connection to Gateway P4/2.2GHz/512MBDDR266 running Windows XP
Home Edition, in another room ~20ft away

Wireless connection between the two computers works.

If the router is removed and the newer Gateway connected to the modem,
Verizon works. The goal is to get the other computer connected as well.

Router set for PPPoE and auto DHCP with correct user and password cannot
connect to Verizon DSL.

Anybody here have any experience with this combination? Any advice is
welcome.
