I was loaned a Dlink 900+ ap from work, the idea is to experiment in setting
up a community wireless network which works fine on the little antenna that
comes with it, placed at the window it seems reasonable but I decided to get
an external beam antenna, realising the beam width would be narrow but a
single point to point was the first experiment, the suprise was even with
decent cable, the outdoor antenna was no better.

Question is is there a better ap out threre which handles outdoor antenna's
better, been thinking of the latest usr turbo model with 150mw output, not
worried at this point about exceeding the legal limit as my ham radio
licence covers this. The distance to achieve is approx 3km.

any views please on ap's

3km is absolutely no problem with a Dlink DWL900+

You need to provide more info, what connectors did you use? Cable?
Specific antenna? Cable length?

David.

Thanks for that David,
Iam using h100 50ohm cable cut to wave length, but have also used the
pigtail straight into the AP and antenna (ie; no cable)
with the same results,
connectors are good quality.
antenna is a 20.5 dbi parabolic mesh antenna as at:
http://www.wlansource.co.uk/catalog/...products_id=10
pig tail was also bought from the same source, specific for the dlink.

That is why I was blaming the AP

I agree, 3km is a piece of cake. any directional antenna will achieve this,
home made or professional. SMA baby food tins are excellent.

The other end to Les has a DWL2000 and 24bdi dish mounted on a 15mtr tower
at 10 mtrs, fed with Andrews LDF4-50 hard line cut to the correct frequency.
We are as Les said about 3km apart if that but there is a very slight hill
in the way, the hill is about 3 mtr higher than our locations, which I would
have thought would have been ok if the dishes are set to a slight elevation
to account for the 3 mtrs, think this is called the fresnel zone, not sure I
may be wrong. Any help would be greatly welcome.

Thanks
John

I have Private messaged the PPA results to Les. That hill as you suggest is
the problem.
For a clear LOS you need a 10m mast at each end.
Total loss then is 112dB.
with 5m masts at each end the loss is 123dB.

Here would be my link budget for this link.
16dBm + 20dB - 5dB - 123dB + 20dB -5dB = -77dBm. Enough for a 11 meg link.

Without the hill the budget is -66dB well enough for a link.

Good luck but you wont need it once you get LOS over that hill.
