Hi Folks
I have no problems at all with my DemonHome broadband but I got a
combined router/modem prior to joining. My nephew has just signed up
with Demon (on my recommendation ;-( and cannot seem to be able to
connect with the Speedtouch 330 usb modem they sent him. I have tried
uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers many times but the damn thing
still won`t connect, I`ve even lent him the 330 they sent me same
problem and wondering what to try next. The `Dr Speedtouch` diagonostic
utility they sent him just says `problem with ADSL line` not much help
really. He has been onto tech support at Demon and they said the line
needs checking or to send a BT engineer to the house and thinking this
would cost him an arm and a leg he said no for now. I`m just wondering
what to try next for him preferably not costing him owt;-) My next step
might be to try my router/modem on his line but any advice what to try
next would be appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

One point - if there is a sync issue with the line, Demon must report
this as a fault to BT Wholesale (so don't phone BT Retail from your
landline and ask them to test the line - it's a waste of time). If the
sync light on the modem is flashing or not lit, the most common cause is
incorrect physical connections at the customers side. You have ruled out
a driver or faulty modem issue. Before calling Demon back, disconnect
all telephone sockets. Connect the following to your MASTER telephone
socket:-

Socket--->Filter---->RJ11 cable--->Modem
----->Telephone

I really must emphasise the importance of being at tha Master telephone
socket - If it's not working when it's set up exactly like this, then
there is probably a line issue. If there is a line issue, BT shouldn't
charge you anything. They may not even have to send an engineer to your
home, they may be able to sort it from the exchange. Another point worth
noting, is that you should not being using an RJ11 cable longer than 10
metres, nor should you be using any other cable or extension at all. It
would also be worthwhile swapping the filter. You could try your router
as well, If that doesn't come in to sync (when set up as above), then
I'd be 99% sure that there is a line issue. When you call Demon back
though, make sure their modem is connected. They would probably give you
the old 'unsupported hardware' line if you had your router connected.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on

George

wrong answer. Get the engineer, its free and he has his own known
working modem and laptop. Demon have to arrange it.

100% correct Phil - but only have he has double checked everything
relating to his own physical connections. I've been told that over 80%
of Broadband faults reported to BT are down to drivers, faulty equipment
or incorrect physical connections.
I've seen too many

Socket--->Filter--->25M extension reel--->Filter--->RJ11--->Modem

and similar set ups!

Thanks George and Phil
I`ll try the things you suggested, didn`t think to try another filter.
I don`t know about other ISP`s but Demon require an asdl login name, a
user name and a password to connect. The login screen only asks for a
user name and password needless to say we tried both user and adsl
login it seems as if there is nowhere to just enter the adsl login like
there was with my setup.
Tried phoning him with your suggestions, think he`s out drownin his
sorrows ;-)

The user name and password are irrelevent if the modem is not in sync
(ie DSL or link light off/flashing). You need two solid lights before
you worry about authentication.

not so,
http://www.demon.net/static-content/...shoot-adsl.pdf
may help.

(E-Mail Removed) is an example format for a
HomeOffice user, where in your case hostname=cuthbert1
this comes in the little foil pack.

It might be @demon500.dslaccess.co.uk for Home accounts, not sure.
Helpdesk would know - try

Only one light comes on and stays on the other flashes. So this means
its not in synch!. I thought it might be an authentication problem but
sounds more like a hardware thing.
He has his pc upstairs connected by phone extension and the master
socket is downstairs in the lounge. He hasn`t had a problem before with
dial up so adsl must be a lot more susceptible to wire/connection
problems then?.
Sorry for the lack of knowhow with adsl but never had a problem with
mine so didn`t have to do much with it.
Cheers again
Steve

In article <(E-Mail Removed) .com>,

Filter problem possibly .... try unplugging *everything* else from the
phone circuit (inc Sky) and see what happens.

Try different filters, *and make sure the extension into which the modem
is plugged isn't filtered incorrectly* - the number of calls i've been
out to where an extension is used betwixt master socket and modem, and
the extension itself has been plugged into the "phone" side of the
filter at the master/feed socket, thereby preventing ADSL from working
on that extension, is countless.

If all else then fails, onto Demon for a BT line test.

He'd do better with the modem downstairs at the master socket, then the
PC networked to that ........
