Greetings!
I have an XP box on which I installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 recently, and
I've been enjoying exploring the world of Linux. I have a couple of
questions about my small home network. I've been reading docs and
manuals and info pages, etc., and reading usenet, but haven't found
appropriate answers, so I'd appreciate any help.
I use a linksys BEFSR41 to connect to my DSL line for net access. So
I have both my XP/Linux box and a win98 box connected to the linksys.
After installing Mandrake, I was able to set up Samba to get a public
directory shared to the win98 machine, and access to the win98
machine's shared directories on the Linux machine, as well as 3
printers connected to the XP/Linux machine. But since the win98
machine is connected to the Linksys (which serves both machines with
DHCP dynamic IPs 192.168.1.100 and .101), I wondered if I would be
better off having the Linux box serve as a domain controller for the
win98 box, in order to keep the win98 box "behind" the Linux box.
Does this make sense? For small networks like this, does it just make
sense to leave both machines with direct access to the internet via
the linksys, and run samba sharing between the two, or is it
recommended to have the Linux box be the primary conduit to the net,
with the win98 machine behind it?
Also, at some point in the samba set up (I've used a variety of
tools), my /etc/fstab was edited to include a mount command for a
directory on the win98 machine, but I've since changed that name, so
now samba fails to mount it. Can I just edit the fstab file to have
the correct name, or should I remove that line? I'd like to have it
automatically mounted, for all users, at boot time, so does that mean
I need to leave the line in, but with the correct name? If I do edit
/etc/fstab, do I need to run lilo afterwards?
Thanks again,
Mark
