Advice for Router

We need to upgrade our network ADSL connection and I'm
looking at the Netgear FVS318 Router and a yet-to-be determined
ADSL modem. As I understand it, the Netgear FVS318 allows
VPN, which is important as the boss wants to sit at home and
connect to the office.

(He used to do this before when our server was running
WinXP on a peer-to-peer network by dialling in to
the office and connecting that way. Now he's scratching his head
wondering why we know have to spend money to let him do
the same thing on our Windows Server 2003 network. Some
people, eh?....)

Question are, what modem would you recommend to go with
the router, and does the Netgear FVS318 do the VPN configuring
or is it still done hrough the Windows Server?

TIA

Why not go for a combined ADSL Modem and Router, such as the Draytek Vigor
2600. This has native VPN inbuilt, so all the configuring is done at the
router level.

Good luck

I'm currently using a 318, excellent router, but as
suggested, maybe a combined router/modem like the Draytek
might be a better & cheaper option.
With regards to VPN & the 318, although I don't use VPN, i
have been doing some research, and you'll still need VPN
client & server software to handle the VPN connection., from
what little reading of the manual I've done so far. It might
be an idea, if you're still considering the 318, to download
the manual from Netgear's site and have a good browse.
other than that, it's an excellent router, pricier than
some, but worth it, in my humble opinion.

Another question - does BTOpenworld Broadband
support VPN?

Hi James, if you mean tunnelling, I use it outwards to work most days so the
answer is 'Yes'. Having said that I have never tried it coming the other
way.

Cheers, Mike

Just get a all in one solwise 715pv that handles vpn very well and its
probably cheaper than what you are proposing. Or cheaper still just put a
second nic into the win 2003 server and use that to handle vpn and nat etc..
(although it might depend on the version of 2003 that you have what kind of
firewall capacities are avaliable.).
