Greetings,

For my Father I'm trying to put together a package of a combined ADSL
modem/ 4-port router/ firewall/ wireless access point (connected via
Ethernet to a Dell desktop PC), plus either a USB or PCI wireless card
for a 2nd Dell desktop PC in another room.

I'm not worried whether it's 11b or 11g, but I guess faster is usually
better :-)

Since my father is somewhat limited on the technical side, I will end up
supporting this setup (usually over the phone !), so it would be helpful
if it is rock-solid, and if it were somewhat similar in setup to my
Draytek Vigor 2600We that would be great.

What the situation with mixing manufacturers ? if I mix (for example) a
Draytek modem with a LinkSys or NetGear wireless card am I going to have
any problems ? yes I know they should all work to the standards, but the
world doesn't always work that way :-(

Draytek don't appear to do PCI or USB wireless cards, so if I go with
them I would be looking at something like a LinkSys, NetGear or 3Com
wireless card.

Alternatively I can see the following possible single-manufacturer combos
on dsl-warehouse.co.uk:

- NetGear DG834G modem/router/WAP + WG311 PCI or WG121 USB wireless card.
- LinkSys WAG54G modem/router/WAP + WMP54G PCI or WUSB54G USB wireless
card.
- 3Com 3CRWE754G72 modem/router/WAP + 3CRDAG576 PCI or 3CRWE254G72 USB
wireless card

Any recommendations ???

If they are wi-fi certified http://www.wi-fi.org they have been tested
for interoperability. "Fancy" features like WEP security might work
best in a single vendor system, and there are some proprietary
extensions like "54g only" or 2x speed options that would also need to
be single vendor.

USB allows you to position the thing for best signal, rather than
having it obscured by the chassis, desk, leg etc.

Look out for the ability to manage it via the ADSL conneciton ie
access to the config system from without.

The netgear seems solid, my dad has one.
Linksys WAG54G is ok, i'm gonna get rid of my one (only a week or 2 old)
because it won't route my global LAN IPs properly

(PS, email me if you want to make an offer for the Linksys box)
