I've just ordered a combined (wireless) Belkin modem router (£114 from
Amazon). It's been shipped and should arrive in a couple of days.

Any advice? Does this device work out of the box or do I should I download
more up-to-date drivers or upgrade the router? Any advice about
installation? Amy weird settings? Are the supplied set-up instructions OK?

Cheers.

Bobby

If the Belkin doesn't come with the latest firmware - upgrade it immediately

Otherwise you will have problems accessing sites such as Ebay, Hotmail,
Windows Update and perhaps even sending email.

The updated firmware (dated 22/1/2004) is available at
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Z11321147

Other than that - I presume you should be ok

Would also be nice if you would post a review, once you have it up and
working (with Belkin 54G cards?)

Regards
Sunil

I bought one of these last weekend to replace my previous stack of
components (SpeedTouch Pro modem, Intel wireless access point and USR switch).

The first thing I did was change the default IP address range to 10.x.x.x -
don't ask me why, but I am used to working with this range and it was very
simple to do.

Setting up the device was very easy and I was online in minutes. Much easier
to set up than the old SpeedTouch.

I also bought a Belkin PCI wireless card for one of my other PCs. This has
been a pain in the proverbial. I spent all day trying to get it to see the
network, then reinstalled the OS. After i had done this it worked fine, but a
couple of days later it decided it wouldn't play ball and now I can't use it,
no matter what I do. I had set up WEP, and tried taking off security but it
makes no difference.

On the other hand, there are two notebooks in the house - an Apple iBook which
uses Apple's AirPort Extreme and a Windows notebook which has a D-Link card in
it. Both these machines connected immediately once I had entered the WEP key
and have been completely reliable since.

I don't know what went wrong with the PCI card - but I have heard of others
with similar problems.

Thanks for the review.

If you haven't tried yet - uninstall the European drivers that come with the
Belkin PCI card and install the "North American" ones.

The functionallity of the two drivers is virtually identical (though the NA
version has 2 less channels) but its much more recent/mature than the
European version

Sunil
