Hi,

Is there anybody out there using either of the following Netgear ADSL
modems: Neatgear FVS318 or Netgear DG834?

The setup we are planning is to have an ADSL modem for a teleworker
(maybe one of the above Netgear modems - inbuilt firewall and VPN
pass-through), who will be able to access the office network via a VPN
using IPSec; the office has a NON-NAT setup. What sort of success has
anyone had with the above two modems? Can anyone suggest other
similar ADSL modems where there has been no probs with the IPSec etc.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm using one of these.

Still struggling with this bit, I'm leaning towards the Cisco PIX now.
The Netgear does a good job as a firewall but for enterprise
applications it's out of its depth.

Using the same router with the latest firmware update and it works fine with
a Netscreen Remote VPN client to my office network.

I use a FVS318, but it's a DSL, not ADSL device. It does NOT
have a modem built into it. I use it for a cable connection.
Also, some ADSL modems don't work with the FVS318 very well.
Shame, because it's a damn good router.

Can't speak for the DG834

The DG834G works fine for me and my partner using Cisco VPN client and
Safenet VPN client to connect into our own offices. Bear in mind that I
think the DG834G supports multiple VPN passthrough only if the server
endpoints are different (when using it in NAT mode) so I dont think you
would be able to have 10 users connecting on a DG834G to the same VPN server

Buy Netgear only if you will enjoy updating the firmware every other week.
If you want solid and reliable ADSL modem / router with VPN, buy Draytek
Vigor 2600, the piece of mind is worth the extra money.
Regards,
Martin
(returned Netgear, bought Draytek, haven't touched it since last May...)

Dear Martin ((E-Mail Removed))

Thanks for your response that you use a DrayTek ADSL modem. Could I
ask you more about your setup? Is it the Draytek Vigor 2600Plus, and
what is your setup?

At the moment we have a box with linux on it that we were planning to
use as the VPN end point at the teleworker's house, using IPSec. We
were then going to put a very simple ADSL modem in front of the
firewall and use in NON-NAT mode. But having problems finding a
simple ADSL modem (without firewall, VPN pass-through or print servers
built in, that will allow you to operate it in NON-NAT mode...... you
seem to have to go to ADSL modems that are a little more sophisticated
like this Draytek one and possibly the Netgear DG834 to be able to
operate in non-nat mode. Also been looking at the Cisco 826 (827H)?
Many people seem to say the same thing about Netgear - having to
update the firmware???

Maybe we should forget our linux box that we were going to use
together with the ADSL modem at the teleworker's house, and JUST use
the above Draytek ADSL modem and the built-in firewall and VPN at the
remote site. We have a very simple ADSL modem supplied by BT
connecting the office to the outside world, with our own firewall
(linux box, that we setup ourselves) as well as a mail relay
(mailserver) - operating in NON-NAT mode.

Is your setup similar to what we want to do?

Any info gladly welcome. Many thanks.
Tricia (& Geoff)

I use 2600We, which is 802.11b the wireless version.
I believe it's possible to disable the NAT and firewall, but that would
defeat the point of paying for a router with all these features.
IIRC ebuyer.co.uk sells some cheap and simple ADSL modems.

Martin
