My original message got replied another post for some reason so I'm
reposting it so it gets seen better.

I'm hoping someone can shed some advice for me. We are trying to
provide wireless Internet in our small town here. There are only about
200 people in the town itself and everyone is pitching in to get high
speed wireless access. The question I have is what type of equipment
are we going to need. We have concluded that a base station and some
access points are needed after talking with a WISP in another town.
They use AP-500's from Proxim for their access points and then
backbone radios. How do the AP's function in relation to the backbone
radios? Would it be safe to assume that backbone radios are just point
to point radios? Looking at base stations from Wave, they state on
some models that it can handle 48 buildings. I assume this is the
number of connections it can maintain. So do you access one of the 48
connections via an access point then from the access point the clients
gain access? I know it's alot of questions but any help is greatly
appreciated. This is a non-profit venture.

The ISP you posted this through on your dialup connection, already offers
wireless solutions:

Wireless backbones replace ethernet wiring, just like the AP to Client
connections, typically a bridged wireless connection (lan2lan)...

First thing you need for any installation is bandwidth to feed it, you'll
need more than a dialup connection for that...

You are starting out from near-zero understanding of the technology, but
you are asking for help in mid to upper levels of performance. Why
don't you simply call your WISP and ask them these questions?

I do have some knowledge of the technology. I've already worked with
WISPS and their networks. I do have an intermediate knowledge of radio
technology. I am not asking about recieving service but to help a
small town with their wireless project. The project is providing
Internet access wirelessly. I was hoping for general info. on the
relationships of the various radios used. For instance, the WISP I
worked with(their afraid to let out any info. for fear of competition)
used certain radios for their backbone radios, then access points. So
would it be realistic to setup a base station, then from the base
station go to access point antennaes in various places and that be
where the client recieves their connection? My question is really
basic I agree, I'm just having difficulty understanding how the radios
work together. If this is not the place to ask, then please point me
to a good source.
Thankyou,
