Wireless can be a bit temperamental, 2.4GHz is very much 'line of
sight' and it's intolerant of obstacles. 1 wall will severely reduce a
signal, 2 can kill it and 3 certainly will.
Is the layout at home such that your laptop can 'see' the WAP? Can you
do anything to reduce the walls and obstructions between them?
I ended up running my WAP in the loft (this is a bungalow) and that
gives me pretty good cover everywhere as it's only 1 layer of (non foil
backed) plaster-board in between the WAP and this laptop.
