Advice on data options please

I wonder if anyone has advice on the following.

I have looked at contract data tarriffs from Three, Orange, TMobile etc
but I am not sure which would be best for my needs:

I am looking at a contract paid monthly data tarriff that permits:

Switching automatically between 3G and GPRS
I will be connecting via laptop (windows xp)
PPTP VPN accessibility
I will be using it mostly for remote access work and remote server
maintenance
PCMCIA data card or a phone as a modem connected via bluetooth - not
sure what the various merits are
A reasonable data allowance per month - ?any "unlimited" tarrifs
available

I was looking at the Three offering - but I can make out if it allows
access via laptop.
