The use of an external antenna on a card is usually only advised as a
last resort. If your signal strength and quality is reasonable then
the external antenna won't accomplish much. If you are trying to make
a very remote connection and the existing signal strength is very weak
then it might help.
All in all the use of an external antenna is more hassels then it is
worth for a notebook PC. When the cheapest access points cost more
then a grand then the use of external antennas was warranted. Now that
an access point can be purchased for $60 or less why bother, just add
extra access points to increase coverage as needed.
