ADSLmax Speed Expectation

My daughter lives in Hemel Hempstead (HP1 2TE) and for the last 18
months has had a 256kbps contract with Pipex.

She wants to change owing to ongoing problems with her current ISP, a
few months back the estimated speed available on her line was given as
2mbps.

Now three different ISPs, including BT, state maximum expected speed to
be 500kbps.

Is there any reason that the expected speeds should drop and what about
existing customers; would their speeds drop.

The other ISPs may well be using BTs data.

Remember that the estimate is just that, and may be incorrect. If you
can get line stats from your current connection, you may be able to get
a better estimate of your possible speeds.

Yes, didn't think of that..

Current connection with Pipex is not working, it is due to their
appalling support that she is changing.

Does she have sync to the exchange at all? The stats from the router
regarding this would be useful, even if she cannot even log into Pipex,
let along use it.

No DSL light illuminates on her Lynksys WiFi router.

The WiFi network sets itself up OK, her router works on my phone line
but nothing on her line.

We've done all the obvious checks, different filters, router plugged
into test socket behind the main socket cover.
