adsl2 routers with be*

Hi,

I'm considering moving to be* with adsl2.

I have some questions others may be able to help with:

* can I use my draytek 2600 or will this not handle adsl2?
I expect it can't handle the higher adsl2 frequencies but no harm
checking. I like my draytek and would be sad to see it go.

* be* provide the following modem: Thomson Speedtouch 716g
this has two voip ATA ports "reserved for future use with be* voice"
Does anyone know if these can be used with a non-be* provider, such as
sipgate or another provider, or will I always be locked into be* voice?

* do I have to pay 24 quid +plus+ my BT line rental, or are be* taking
over the whole line i.e. LLU?

I would have asked be* these but after holding for 10 minutes to get
through to their sales desk I got bored...

Thanks in advance,

Ben.

As the draytek 2600 doesn't support ADSL2+, it will work but only upto 8MB.

Suggest you ask in the unlisted providers forum on
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ - as there are quite a few "live" Be users on
there who may know.

Yes, £24 + the BT line rental as the "voice part" remains with BT as its
only partial LLU not full LLU.

However, you can get one month free if you are referred by a Be customer
(they get one month as well) - if interested, just send me an email...

Regards
Sunil

Really? that's no good. Oh for a provider offering a cheap, data only
full LLU connection in my area! I have homechoice, bulldog and easynet.

Homechoice insist on selling me stuff I don't want/need (tv/phone)
Bulldog have such a bad rep I dare not go near them
Easynet seem interested only in businees customers

These are my three LLU options in my area. I'd got my hopes up but it
looks like I'm best off with Zen + BT. I'd +love+ to give BT the flick
but at the moment I can't justify an LLU provider.

Any ideas on the above 3 welcome.

Ben.

Bulldog is really the only LLU company currently offering full LLU (i.e.
including line rental) for residential customers, though it looks like
Carphone Warehouse will be doing it on some exchanges from next year. (I
think Homechoice are still on shared LLU)

Based on my experience (I use them) Bulldog has improved considerably quite
a bit recently - the technical side has always been ok but its CS and
billing have let them down in the past (as well as delays sometimes on
installation but BT/LLU companies generally seem to getting to grips with
those)

If you do want to sign up with Bulldog would you mind quoting my referral
code? -just quote "bdol 1734734" when signing up online (under "How did you
hear about Bulldog?/Referred by a Friend") or just mention it while ordering
by telephone (and please drop me an email tolet me know!).

All the other LLU companies do shared LLU and not full LLU

Easynet are not directly interested in home users but they have their own
"consumer division" called UKOnline (http://www.ukonline.net/) who offer
consumer LLU services and several other ISP's are buying LLU services at a
wholesale level from Easynet like F2S(http://www.f2s.net/) and hence are
also selling shared LLU services on Easynet LLU exchanges.

HomeChoice's service is ok but I have always thought it a bit pricey but may
make economic sense if comparing against cable or Sky packages.

Zen are considered a good ISP and its always possible you may want to wait
until Spring when BT Wholesale's upto 8MB service will have much greater
availability (though by then all LLU companies will be on "upto" 24MB
ADSL2+)

Regards
Sunil

Nope. as I said in the parent to your post, I've struck be* off the list
as they don't provide a full LLU solution that allows me to get rid of
BT.

I either want cheap broadband over a BT rented line or moderately priced
broadband (say 1 or 2 meg) through an LLU provider.

For the former UKonline are looking pretty good at 10 quid a month.

For the latter at present I'm not aware of one for the Pimlico exchange.

Presently I'm with Zen 512K for 25/month. Great service when I've needed
them (hardly ever) but at 250% the cost for 50% the bandwidth, it's time
to move on. :-(

i dont know Zen - but ask if they will alter the cost / speed before you
leave if you are happy with them.

they might prefer to keep a customer at a lower price rather than lose the
income altogether.

agreed. looks like another quality product. trouble is it weighs in at
152 quid. not that cheap - and I'm on the lookout for a quality voip
hardware phone too :-)

I may have to lust from afar until the price drops below 100...

Ben.

cheers,

ben.
