ADSL2+ questions - ukonline

Currently with plusnet on a 512 service. I think my line can handle a 1mb
adsl service, my stats are:

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 24 dB 19 dB
Attenuation 63 dB 56 dB

I am not to sure how accurate the upstream is, but the downstream is
accurate, through various different routers, with the attenuation ranging up
to 61db.

When i use a faceplate filter the noise margin figures rise a little bit,
(ds up to 23 to 25).

Now question is, about ADSL2+ as far as i understand it, the big gains for
ADSL2+ are not so much length but speed increases at shorter lines, but that
ADSL2+ does offer some hope for us further away.

I am presuming that ukonline network (LLU) will now be running ADSL2+ on all
their service provisions, and not just on those who want the 22mb service.

With the above line stats on 512k, with an ADSL2+ connection, anyone reckon
a 2mb or higher line speed is possible???

Gaz

How do you record those dB figures below? Some utility let's you measure?

Thanks

No chance. You need to have your exchange upgraded. Until that's done,
stop waffling.

no chance with 63dB attenuation.

If you are using a router, rather than just a modem, it will almost
certainly have a page somewhere showing those figures.

Ah, thanks - am using an ADSL modem, hence couldn't see them.

most modems can disclose them too, see

Ah, thanks - I have Dr Speedtouch - this is what it said - what do these
mean?

ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 23
ReceiveMargin_dB= 31

SendAttenuation_dB= 11
SendMargin_dB= 29

They mean you have a pretty good line. The Attenuation is effectively
the length of your line, and low figures are good. The Margin is
affected by things such as noise, and high figures are good.

It gives different figures between send and receive because the signals
will be at different frequencies, and the line behaves differently as
the signal frequency changes.

I'm not sure how accurate these measurements are, but it looks
substantially better than my line.
