With all the current excitement, what hope is there for us 'long liners' stuck
with 512k ADSL ? Will the new technology offer any improvement for our end of
the market ?

(Attn 63dB s/n 19dB)

ADSL2+ offers no improvement for those on longer lines - however the
stats you give suggest your line would be fine with 1Mbit, assuming your
modem isn't lying to you about the SNR. You might be able to get your
ISP to try a manual order to regrade you to 1Mbit.

I would support that. I went from 512k to 1M with 63.9dB and 18dB
reported by my modem. get a few "error seconds" in the stats -
currently on the bad side at 12 in 20mins!

Should have included that the SNR is now down to 12.3dB.

Been there, sort of, I wrote to BT Wholesale a few months ago requesting they
review my line's status, and giving them my router stats, they wrote back
(very politely) point blank refusing stating that my 63dB attenuation figure
was out of spec for 1 Meg.

I was with Pipex then, and they were no help at all (hence going to BT
direct). I'm with Eclipse now, I might give them the challenge ?

I have 1mb running fine on a 63db attenuation figure with a 10db noise
margin. I must be extremely lucky then.

I've even put my name down for ADSL2, so I expect I might be pushing
my luck a little.

I had 1 meg running for over a year 24/7 never dropped on 64dB 14dB SNR
Margin, was 64dB 21SNR Margin on a 512k connection reported on a Draytek
2600W Router. That took a lot of arguing with BT but got there in the end.

Now moved house and got 61.5dB and 20.5 SNR Margin and cant have 1 Meg. Bt
may need a bit of a push me thinks, but cant be bothered as moving again in
April

To paraphrase BT's line checker, I'd probably need an engineer to
install 1 Meg due to my line length. Needless to say I have been using
2 Meg for ages without any problems since I moved to this house nearly
three years ago.
