I see there's some people offering to sell intructions on how to un-lock the
Sky-branded Netgear Modem/Routers.

Surely it'sjust a case of re-flashing the firmware, which can be done quite
easily, isn't it? Or has something else been done to knobble them?

Just interested from a technical POV. Honest ;-)

It is really simple, well it must be because I was able to do it less times than
it takes to make a mug of coffee!

Just visit the SkyUser Forums and you will find simple step by step
instructions!

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/

I not about which thread precisely, but you should be able to find the info
pretty quickly...

Best Wishes to one & all,

Gaz.

It's not as simple as you imply as the Sky firmware won't allow a straight
reflash to official Netgear (or any other!) firmware. Going via an
emergency "recovery mode" is required.

As Sky's firmware is created by Negear for them there is not much difference.

Is it actually worth doing, or doesn't it add enough to make the
potential hassle if you bugger it worthwhile ?

i bought a sky router for £8 (ebay), and reflashed to use with vivacity.
well worth it in my case!
took about 2 mins.

Don't Sky retain ownership of the routers they send out, hence buying
them off eBay is technically theft and reflashing them is technically
tampering with someone elses equipment?

No - totally incorrect! As with all Sky equipment the router is the customers
property from day one.
