I realise ADLS is fast one way and much slower the other. But
what I'm unsure of is does this flip (like the old HST modems) to
be fastest in the data direction ?
Or is it like the old V23 1200/75 modems and stuck in fast
one way and snail pace the other ?

Thanks

It stays fast downstream and slower upstream

Becasue it's full duplex: data is sent and recived /at the same time/,
so there is no "data direction" to flip.

This was also the case with 14400/300 (?) HST modems, that sent full duplex,
but switched the 14400 side over to whichever side was busy.

If memory serves (and it usually doesn't, too well these
days ;-) ) the HST was 9600/450. Then USR brought out the
V32's (9600/9600) the the V32bis made an appearance (14K4
both ways)
One thing I *do* remember, my V32 cost just over £700 !!

lol

first modem I had was 150 baud, real baud. Built it myself, never did
get it type approved

Then I upgraded it to a massive 300 baud! WOW, what a difference!

What other sort of baud is there? :-)
