ADSL Sync Logging Software?

Hello Experts!

Does anyone know of a synchronisation logging program for use with a router?

I suffer from a few drop outs - I would like to monitor and log when I lose
sync. I am using a DSL-504 router and I know I have the built in events log,
but all I need is a basic logger that tells me when I attain sync and when
it drops.

I imagine anything available will be more complex than I need as the program
will be monitoring the NIC rather than the router?

Perhaps I just have to make do with the router log as that will directly
monitor the connection?

Thanks for any pointers.

Take a look at that, it's not exactly what you want, but it's the
only thing that I can think of that might provide the info you are after.

Are you on a dynamic or static IP address ?

I use a small app called yipost.exe to update a dyndns.org address I
have, and it has a built in IP address checker - if my IP address changes
(as it does when my connection drops) it will email me with the time it
detected a change (5 minute minimum update period)

I don`t think its supported anymore by the author, but if you want to
give it a try drop me an email as below - the program itself is about
100k IIRC, and can be run from anywhere (it`ll make a small .cfg for
itself when you configure it though, and there is a logging option if
you need it)

Hi Colin,

its a 'sticky' dynamic address - so if I disconnect there is a fair chance I
get the same one back so it may not work for me.

See my reply to Steve on the same thread as to my 'fault' update, it may
have been fixed. I'll email you if I need it.

Many thanks.

Thanks Steve,

I'll give it a look - however 48hrs after I have remade the connections on
the wire side of the BT master socket I haven't dropped a beat - and thats
after being without sync for up to 4hrs+ a day.

Funny it never affected the voice side but did the ADSL. I assumed I was
borderline losswise. My router reports 6.3km away with -65dB loss and 7dB
sig/noise (with a few tx/rx errors admittedly).

However we have only just moved here - my last place being well in the stix
with 7km, -68Bd and 3.5dB AND IT WORKED - for over a year before we moved!

The new people will not be able to get it as the availablity checker now
says 'No Way Jose'.

That's okay if you have a short lease. I have had the same IP address
since September, even though I have dynamic IP and have been offline for
up to an hour. (A power cut about a week before xmas !)

Glad it's sorted, mine is 'only' 52dB. Low by comparison.

Maybe look for some sort of network monitor that pings (say) mail.pipex.com
or whatever every 10s, and goes "bing" if it does not reply.

Thanks Ian,

I'd thought of that but there is always (very slight) chance that mail.pipex
or whoever I choose would be down, but I would still have sync. Ideally I
wanted an ADSL sync logger not a site pinger however I'm sure that in the
real world your suggestion would actually work though.

As it stands I have been connected for 48hrs with one 3sec glitch since
reconnecting my master BT socket to the outside world.

Do you know any scripting languages, this makes this sort of stuff
lots easier.
It takes around 25 seconds for my modem to sync, so any outages will be
at least this long.
I've got a logger that works for my router (ASR8000) but that relies
on it having a telnet interface.
What's wrong with the onboard log?
